Foodsmiths 8th Annual Charity Dog Wash for the Lanark Animal Welfare Society, held this past Saturday, was a splashing success that raised over $1000 for the shelter. The dog wash is one of the most heartwarming events in LAWS' fundraising line up. It is an enjoyable day of greeting old friends, making new ones, laughing and talking, getting soaking wet and loving every minute of it. It is a day that's gone to the dogs - and we wouldn't have it any other way. Though it is only the second year LAWS board member Melanie Young and I have helped organize this fundraiser, we knew everything would go spectacularly because of the dedication of our volunteers and sponsors. Our heartfelt thanks to the many people who helped make this event a success. ·

to us: A very special thanks to Gary Dean, mechanic Wayne Wesley and Daphne Murray of Canadian Tire in Perth for coming to Melanie's rescue when she had truck trouble while transporting our supplies to Foodsmiths on Friday evening. Gary had just finished work when he received Mel's frantic call for help. He arrived minutes later, transferred our supplies to his vehicle and made sure Mel got to Canadian Tire. Wayne, who was just about to leave for home when Mel arrived, kindly stayed to fix the truck - no charge for labour and told Mel he had a great boss who always appreciated it when his staff went above and beyond to help out their customers. And
to all
the
people

thank
you

When the idea of a Kitten Shower came up as an awareness generating afternoon for LAWS – our first thought was – what a splendid idea! And splendid it turned out to be June 5 as support poured in to The Courtyard Café in Davidson’s Courtyard, Smiths Falls. The shower attracted 30 to 40 people who brought with them a few hundred dollars in both cash and gifts for the many kittens at the shelter. One of those gifts was an embroidered baby blanket! LAWS thanks all the people who came out to donate and learn more about LAWS and its programs. A huge thank you goes to Wendy Andison, the owner of The Courtyard Cafe who gave a free coffee/tea and dessert to everyone who donated. To the other good merchants and to Davidson’s Courtyard owner, Tony Humphrey, who shared their beautiful outdoor space with us, thank you for your support. And we would be amiss if we didn’t send out a special thank you to McDuff, Tony's dog who was very kind to the three kittens who took over his play area for the afternoon. Several LAWS Board Members were on hand to provide information to the public, as well as Larry Wilkinson, LAWS Animal Control Officer who was in attendance to tell people about our Spay Neuter Assistance program. Information was given to donors regarding the importance of spaying and neutering. The sheer number of kittens LAWS sees each spring are a testament to the importance of the spay/neuter program – right now LAWS has over 50 kittens at the shelter who will need to find forever loving homes and several cats with kittens are on foster. Thanks once again to everyone who helped in the putting together of this event and to all who came out to both donate and learn more. The kittens thank you too!
Woofstock – a one day festival of people, pups and mew-sic truly lived up to its name May 15. And that is thanks to the many people who helped make the day possible: musicians - Kerry Porteous, John Cullen, Lyle Dillabough, Clyne Bros Band, Amanda Jordan, the artists who came out for our first every art show and sale, the volunteers who put on our garage and book sales, the shelter staff who all came in early to get things done and gave tours to over 70 people throughout the day, Board of Directors volunteers, John Cullen who kept busy doing caricatures, the Railway Canal Chocolate Festival volunteers who cooked the food, to Garden Market for both providing all of the lovely flowers that made our yard look so beautiful and for the food, Helen Young who organized the Silent Auction. And to the several hundred people who came to take part in the day’s events – thank you. It was because of all of these people that $3,300 was raised for LAWS – to aid in caring and loving for the over 100 cats and 12 dogs in the shelter’s care at any one time until they each find their forever homes, to aid with programs like SNAP (spay neuter assistance program), for building maintenance and more. The number of people all wearing smiles and the positive energy in the air made this re-creation of the annual open house event a truly wonderful day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Laws Book Sale and the Festival of the Maples The Sun was shinning brightly, in beautiful downtown Perth on Saturday April 24th, for the LAWS Festival of the Maples Book Sale, a great deal of the warmth was being spread over the white tents at the LAWS booth. Because of the generosity and continued support of the wonderful people who donated their gently used books, and the people who take such great pleasure in reading the books, LAWS will now have nearly $ 3,000.00 to help benefit our Shelter Animals, all of the proceeds raised will go directly to the animals in our care. The success of the Laws Festival of the Maples Book Sale is the result of many Helping hands who spent endless hours sorting books and transporting them to Perth a huge undertaking, which is greatly appreciated. Thank you to the following Town and Country Chrysler for providing LAWS with the beautiful Silver Dodge Caravan which helped to transport books, from the Shelter location to Perth, and also The Smiths Falls Canal Railway and Chocolate Festival for the use of their wonderful White Event Tents. Thank you to the Perth Chamber of Commerce and the Festival of the Maples Committee, we at LAWS are always privileged to be a part of such a wonderful event. To our Volunteers, and Friends of LAWS thank you for your kindness and compassion for the Shelter Animals, you were with us every step of the way.
LAWS SPRING CRAFT SHOW A HUGE SUCCESS – $2,000.00 LAWS wishes to thank the following people and businesses for their tremendous support and generosity for our 1st Annual Laws Spring Craft Show and Bazaar a huge success which raised $ 2,000.00 on Saturday April 10th 2010 at the Smiths Falls Royal Canadian Legion. The success of all of our Laws Fundraising Events, depends entirely on a group of dedicated and energetic volunteers, family members and friends, our Shelter team, and the Laws Board of Directors. To all of you an extra special Thank You, we could not move forward without your continued support. To the many Vendors a group of wonderful people with a stunning selection of beautiful craft and art work, thank you for a sold out event, every $ 20.00 rental space went directly to support our Spay Neuter Program which at this time of the year finds our Shelter overwhelmed with kittens. Thank to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 and the Ladies Auxiliary for their wonderful lunch, also thank you to our friends from the media community who continue to help bring awareness to Laws and the Shelter Animals in our care, Lake 88; Town and Country Chrysler, Jack FM, TV Cogeco The Emc/Record News; Smiths Falls This Week, The Humm. Thank you to the following businesses that generously donated items to our silent auction: Our Bake table was brimming with delicious goodies, all of which were donated by friends of Laws, Wendy from Davidson’s Courtyard and Café, thank you once again for supporting yet another event for Laws. Thank you also to Catherine Orafald, who donated her beautiful art work, with all proceeds going directly to Laws, John Cullen who was on hand for the entire event as a friend of Laws, creating beautiful caricatures, also a very special thank you to the many Craft Show Vendors, who with great kindness donated portions of their sales to Laws. To the many people who stopped by our Laws tables and made a purchase or remembered our Shelter Animals with a little something in the donations boxes, thank you.
