Happy Endings Fall 2011

We adopted Clive on Saturday, October 8, 2011. We had actually fallen for him a couple of weeks prior when we viewed him on your webpage, but when we first dropped by he was not yet ready to leave the shelter, as he required a second surgery for the entropian condition in his right eye. On the 8th we hoped all the way over to Smiths Falls from Carleton Place that he would still be available for adoption when we arrived, and he was! Waiting just for us - or so it seemed, as he put his big arms around us and grunty-purred, giving forceful chin nudges when we first met.
Our other cat Sweetie, was not sure she wanted to relinquish the position she's held for five years, as "only cat", so we kept Clive safely sequestered in the master bedroom upstairs, with his own food dishes and litter-box for the first several days. He was right at home there immediately, stretching out on the bed with his feet in the air, welcoming any and all belly rubs and chin scratches, purring in his cute grunty way. He meowed by the door each time Sweetie stood outside it growling at him, trying eagerly to entice her to friendship. Clive has the most unique meow we've ever heard; more reminiscent of a bear cubs call than a cat's meow!
Gradually we let the two cats mingle for (very) supervised visits, to ensure that Clive didn't get his nose shorn off by Sweetie, whose manners were not at all as good as Clive's. He doggedly (cat version) followed her around for a couple of days, burbling to her "Look at me!" and "Let's play!"and she would have none of it - growling, spitting, and throwing swats at him whenever she thought she could get away with it. In all that time, sweet-tempered Clive did not raise a paw to her once, nor did he show any verbal aggressiveness whatsoever toward her.
He finally wore her down, and we were thrilled yesterday to see the two of them actually playing with one another. Now when Clive is within swatting distance of Sweetie, she either ignores him or follows him with her eyes first and them takes off in a playful romp after him. For the first time, we let them both freely roam the house last night and were pleased that all stayed quiet and no fur flew. In fact, in the morning, they were both sleeping on the same bed, not quite snuggled, but maybe that will come down the road.
Anyway, thank you so much for rescuing Clive - who we call "Clivey" and looking after him so well until he came to live with us. He is the sweetest natured cat you could imagine, gentle and playful and sometimes even a bit goofy, which is hard to reconcile with the oh-so-serious expression his face seems to wear all the time due to his low eyebrows. Speaking of eyes, we continue to put the antibiotic goop in his right eye, and he's stoically cooperative while we give him a warm washcloth wipe down and apply the medicine. Oh, one last thing - my daughter gave him a lukewarm tub bath on his first day here, as the shelter smells clinging to him were making her sneeze (she's not allergic to cats, but is sometimes bothered by doggy smells), and he loved it!

Thanks again, from the Mayer family

On November 12, 2008, I went to L.A.W.S. to pick look at kittens and cats. My previous cat; Mischief died in my arms in July of that year. I was asked what I was looking for and told the great lady there that I wished to look at kittens. She led me to a room with a few cages in there and let out the little darlings. I had spoken to a few cat breeders about choosing a cat and they told me to let the cat choose me. I took that advice to heart when I went into the room. I sat down on one of the chairs and watched the kittens scamper about. One of them came to me, crawled up my pants and settled on my stomach. I let it sit there for about 5 minutes or so dozing and purring. I gently picked it up and put it down on the floor and watched its reaction. It walked around the room and then crawled back up my pant leg and resettled on my stomach. I took that as a sign that it had chosen me. I didn't know at the time that that sweet kitten was a female named Patches. I immediately asked the clerk to get her ready. She was coming home with me. Since I hadn't really planned on purchasing a kitten that day, I was not fully prepared, but the great staff there got a nice temporary carrying cage for me. I paid for her, got the appropriate paperwork and left for our home in Carleton Place. I had a name picked out for her; I originally was going to name her Pandora because cats are naturally curious, but on our way, she made the most interesting noises, purrs, squeaks and sounds that she reminded me of a calliope; so I decided that that was her name. Caliope. That was just under three years ago and I cannot be more happy with my 44th birthday present to myself. She is a wonderful cat, companion, conversationalist and best of all....friend. We thank you for bringing us together.

I adopted Saffron on April 2nd of this year. She spent the first three days hidden amongst boxes in my storeroom. Slowly she is emerging and trusting me and her new environment. It is amazing what bribery will do (beef and turkey flavored Temptations). She will jump onto my lap to get some! She now has the run of the house. She even accepted "invaders"; I adopted Phantom from LAWS (another cat) in August and in
October my parents visited for two weeks and she did not go into hiding.

After looking back at our lives, we realize that we have been involved with over a dozen dogs, all of them purebred, some more charming than others. After being dogless for a year, in 1999 we went to Laws on a search and rescue mission, and met Jack, the love of our lives- a Walker hound cross, definitely the most charming and pleasant dog we have ever known. Our daughter calls him "a real gentleman". At 12 1/2 he is still very active, loves to play ball and ride in the car, and generally keeps us going. "Grow old along with me- the best is yet to be."

We adopted Hotchner (aka Max) almost 2 years ago from LAWS...his paperwork simply read that he "...had been seized from his home by court order and brought to the shelter" and we chose him knowing he hadn't been treated very well and knew we'd have to work to socialize him into our household of small kids, a dog and two other cats. In no time at all, it was like he'd always been with us. All of his fears and shyness and distrust of people faded away. He's become 'My baby" and follows us everywhere. Minutes after you sit or lay down, he's there and ready for his time to be 'adored'! He has become so pampered and spoiled and is the most snugly cat on earth, but he also has a lively fun side and he loves racing around with our other two cats and occasionally he enjoys "teasing" the dog. We love him dearly and he's now very content that he's found the perfect home. Despite his "humble beginnings" where he lived prior to arriving at the shelter, he's now found the place where he was meant to be!

Thank you for helping to bring such a wonderful addition to our family, into our lives and thank you for all the care and attention Hotchner received prior to our adopting him!

Hi, I thought I would update you on the pets that i have adopted from the shelter. Cruiser, is a hound x that i adopted in July of 2010. He has become a fantastic pet with the biggest heart in the world. He loves to run and even likes to chase my horses. He also likes to climb trees and jumps over the horses jumps. He has fit in to our lifestyle better then could be expected as he was at LAWS for quite awhile before we brought him home. He even seems to have made a permanent dent at the end of the bed and has more toys then he could ever play with. Mushu (previously Norris) is a kitten that I adopted just a couple of weeks ago. Mushu is a rare case as he is a calico male. He loves to cuddle and seems to be fitting in quite well. Even him and Cruiser seem to get along just fine. Mushu shocks everyone that meets him because of his tri coloured tail. I am very thankful that LAWS is around or less the family that i have now would not be the same. My pets always thank you for giving them the chance that every animal deserves.

I wanted to thank you all for what you do. Because of your efforts I have two wonderful kitties, Winston and Swizzle. Winston is definitely a boy (and is going to be a big boy I think) he's always wanting to roughhouse, but knows to keep his claws in (thank goodness). Swizzle is a cute little female who loves attention, and doesn't mind relaxing in your lap getting patted. She has a cute little purr and is learning to give high fives. The both play together, Winston seems to know not to be too rough, but the Swiz still gets her pokes in too. They seem to be good company for each other. Each loves their treats, catnip and brushing sessions. Both have tons of energy and are always on the move batting their toys around and chasing each other. They have taken to sleeping on the bed at night (for a while at least) and are there ready for some attention when the alarm goes off in the morning and at the door when I get home from work. They let you know for sure!! It's really great having them around.

Thank you all.

We have just adopted Dusty from you guys this past week and wanted to let you know how much we love her and how much she has adjusted in just a few short days. She is healing well from her spay and have not had any problems so far. She sits, lies down, shakes a paw and rolls over for us. She is an amazing dog and we thank you all so much for bringing her into our family and our hearts!! She has also been given a new name, Abby. I attached some photos so you can see how happy she is and how happy we are to have her!!

Thank you LAWS,

Brittany G

Here is Moriarty settling in with his new best friend Sheba, unfortunately the cats would not join the poses. His beagle call has certainly livened up the wildlife in the bush and he loves to talk a lot around the house and has proven very active with a tennis ball. We are delighted we adopted him.

This is Ruby Ann, we got her from LAWS about a year and a half ago. Her name was Twilight at the centre, however we changed her name. My husband and I are grateful every single day that we are blessed with Ruby Ann. She gives us love and makes us laugh every single day. She has the most personality we have ever had in a pet. She gets along fabulous with our other 2 cats. Our older cat Marty is much slower than Ruby Ann (we joke that Ruby Ann goes everywhere 95 miles per hour sideways!) but she makes sure Marty feels love and his ears are always clean. Our other cat AuBree Lyn is about the same age as Ruby Ann and they play fabulously together. We have a great home and Ruby Ann definitely contributes a major part of the happiness and laughter around here. Thank you LAWS everyone should have a "Ruby Ann" in their life!
