Adopting A Shelter Dog

This may be the year you decide to add an animal to your life. If so, here are some important things to keep in mind when adopting a dog. There are advantages to selecting one of the older dogs available for adoption at LAWS. Chances are that dog has already received some basic training and may even be house trained. Also, a full grown dog will reveal its full size and temperament, giving you a better idea of the type of animal you are adding to your life. Never base your decision strictly on the appearance of the dog. It is important to consider other factors such as the amount of grooming or exercise that animal will require. Choose the animal that has the right personality for your family.

After you bring your new dog home, keep in mind that it might take some time to become comfortable in its new surroundings. It has likely already been abandoned once and it will feel insecure about its status at first. Your dog will need some basic training to become its best. Whether using a professional dog trainer, or working with the animal yourself, always be sure to use positive and reward based practices. Your dog will be eager to please you so praise oriented training will be the most effective. More than anything else, provide your new pet with a sense of consistency and love and it will become the loyal, affectionate and content companion you both deserve.
