Amusing Facts

By Tanya M. Petrokov

From The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS):

The cat is an amazing animal and here are a few interesting facts that you might find amusing.

  • The largest accurate record of a cat litter was held by a four-year-old Burmese cat who had nineteen kittens.

  • The most credible record for the world’s oldest cat goes to “Ma”, a female Tabby from England who was thirty-four-years-old when she died.

  • A cat can jump up to five times its own body height, which is equivalent to a human jumping thirty feet in a single leap.

  • When a cat affectionately rubs up against your legs it is actually transferring its scent to you and picking up some of your smell. To the cat, this shared scent is reassuring and provides a sense of safety.

  • Cats that live together in groups begin to share their scent which is why a new intruder is met with such resistance.

  • Animals are frequently used in advertising because they convey warmth and the universal feeling of domesticity and comfort. In fact, the idea for the smiling Cheshire cat in “Alice in Wonderland” came from a Cheshire Cheese that had a smiling cat’s face marked on one end.
