Christmas Pet Safety Reminder
The Lanark Animal Welfare Society reminds readers to ensure their pets have a safe and happy Christmas. Holiday decorations can pose a danger to pets, so here are some reminders on what to watch out for this Christmas.
Christmas trees dangling with glittery decorations can be irresistible to the curious cat. It is always a good idea to wire your Christmas tree to a ceiling hook, if possible.
Pine sap that seeps into water in your tree stand can be poisonous to pets. Keep your tree stand covered to avoid those pets in search of a new drinking bowl.
Hang more fragile decorations on higher branches to avoid breakage. Metal, wood and plastic decorations should be hung on lower branches.
Never use strands of tinsel, which are frequently eaten by cats and dogs. At best, you will be following them around the house with a pair of scissors performing a daily “tinsillectomy”. At worst, digestion of tinsel can be fatal.
Poinsettias, holly, ivy and mistletoe are all poisonous to pets.
For those pets who enjoy sniffing their way through the wrapped presents, be careful with food products, particularly chocolate which is poisonous to animals.
Remember that diarrhea and vomiting can be signs of poisoning so be aware. Keep your family safe this Christmas, including your pets, and it is sure to be a joyous time for everyone.
