Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

By Tanya M. Ursual

From The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) L.A.W.S., P.O. Box 156, Smiths Falls, ON, K7A 4T1:

Did you know that it costs LAWS approximately $850 PER DAY to stay in operation. Our total operating expenditures for the 2007 fiscal year were $315,000. Our expenditures include everything from Veterinary bills, hydro and phone, wages, garbage disposal to kitty litter.

Did you know that some shelters in North America have euthanasia rates as high as 50 or 60%? Did you know that LAWS’ euthanasia rate is less than 8%. Euthanasia is a sad reality of any shelter as animals frequently arrive that are seriously ill. Although it breaks our heart, sometimes ending an animal's suffering is the kindest act of all. This year, we have operated on and saved more animals than ever before including Hugo the dog with the facial tumour, amputations from broken bones (leg and tail), dental surgery, emergency C-section and the list goes on.

Did you know that most days at LAWS there are only three paid staff members on duty to care for approximately 100 animals? We have a small network of volunteers that turn up at 8am to offer assistance when they can

Did you know that LAWS never closes and we are staffed 365 days a year?

Did you know that LAWS does 4-5 loads of laundry per day and has two dryers in order to keep up?

Did you know that LAWS admitted nearly 200 cats in the first three months of this year?

Did you know that LAWS accepts donations both in Remembrance of friends who have passed away and donations in loving memory of a companion animal who has passed?

Did you know that LAWS, that like all shelters, undergoes random surprise visits from an Animal Care Specialist from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA)? Did you know that LAWS underwent a surprise inspection in January of this year and received a PERFECT inspection score?

AND did you know that LAWS does not receive any money from the Government? We must find a way to raise $850 per day to cover our expenses through our fundraising initiatives, small adoption fees and through donations from supporters such as you.
