Pet Tips When Traveling

By Tanya M. Petrokov

From The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS):

For those of you who plan to travel this Christmas season, here are some pet tips to keep in mind. Whether you are taking your cat/dog with you or leaving it behind, there are some important things to consider before your departure. Deciding whether or not your pet should accompany you will depend on its age, temperament, physical limitations as well as considering if the destination will be pet friendly. In most cases your dog will be excited to join you and will enjoy the adventure. An older pet might find the confines of the tight space within a car difficult, so be prepared to make frequent stops allowing your animal to stretch. Remember to bring food, water (for the journey), bowls, leashes, medication and a comfy bed with familiar smells. Wherever you are going, check ahead to see what rules, if any, are imposed on pets.

You might decide that your cat or dog would rather not endure a long trip and would prefer the comforts of home. Make sure you have a responsible friend, relative or neighbour caring for your animal while you are away. That person should be someone your pet feels very comfortable with and vice versa. They should be provided with the name and number of the animal’s veterinarian, be aware of the animal’s medical or dietary needs and they should be able to contact you in case they have any questions. Make sure to pick up lots of food and/or litter a few days before you leave.

Finally, there is always the option of a boarding kennel but be sure to ask a vet for a recommendation. Any reputable kennel should already have a good working relationship with a local vet so this recommendation will come easily. Whether leaving your pet in the care of a friend or in a kennel it is a good idea to call and check in while you are away.

Whether on the trip with you, or ecstatic at sight of your return, remember to be patient with your pet. After all, they just want to share in your excitement too and a safe and happy pet is the best Christmas gift of all.
