Pets can be therapists
Many past articles have discussed the things you can do to help animals but what about how pets help us? Did you know that pets can be therapists for people? Many children tell their animals secrets and feel a deep sense of trust toward the family pet. Animals can be excellent teachers in their ability to help people learn responsibility, compassion, loyalty and love. There is a definite proven link between the way people treat animals and how they interact with other humans. In fact, where animal abuse has existed in the home, there is a good chance that there has also been violence towards people. It is not uncommon for animals to improve the morale and communication within a home or workplace. Animals have been used in the military, prisons, class rooms and old age homes to improve the quality of human lives.
Pets can help people who are lonely and isolated by giving them a sense of purpose and companionship. As our life span increases, the elderly can benefit from the companionship and love of an animal. Animals, specifically cats, have been proven to lower blood pressure and taking the family dog for a walk may be just the exercise you need to live a healthier lifestyle. Some dogs are miraculously able to detect the signals that precede a seizure, thereby giving their owner a warning that may save their life. Of course, dogs have been used to assist the visually impaired for many years.
These are just a few of the ways in which pets help people. All reasons aside, nothing quite compares with the feeling of being unconditionally loved by your pet. It might be the warm greeting at the door when you return home, the longing look out the window when you leave, the lick on a hand, the cuddle in your lap or that precious gaze across the room. To your companion animal, you have no flaws and that may be the most perfect therapy of all!
