The Goose Story:
Although Canada Geese are not something that LAWS sees a lot of, their flying behaviour is lesson for all of us about team work. They illustrate how clever animals can be and how important it is for us all to work together. This article was featured in the Galt Global Review:
Geese fly in a “V” formation to create an uplift of air for the bird immediately flying behind. The “V” formation allows the flock to fly 71% farther than if each bird flew on its own. Geese actually honk as a way of encouraging those up front to keep their speed. When the lead Goose gets tired, it rotates back in the “v” formation and another goose step-ups to take the lead fighting the wind from the point position. When a goose weakens or is injured, two geese fall out of the formation to help him down and stay with him until he either able to fly again or until he dies. They then join another formation until they can catch up with their original group.
The Life lesson:
When tasks are difficult, people need to support each other. A common vision and direction helps when everyone supports one another and can get further faster. The power of praise is critical to success. It pays to take turns.
