Four-legged friends shown the love by
Carleton Place's McDougall Insurance and Financial
August 17, 2011

McDougall Insurance and Financial is observing 65 years of service in 2011, and its Carleton Place branch celebrated the achievement with a $2,000 donation to LAWS. A cheque presentation took place Aug. 17 during an anniversary barbecue at the local office. The gift to LAWS was part of a much larger $65,000 donation by the family-owned company - divided up in local communities across Ontario.

August 14, 2011

Gwen Robertson of the Almonte Royal Canadian Legion presented LAWS board members Liz Taylor and Pam Knowles with a record check for $605 raised at the Charity Bingo nights this past month. Thanks especially to Gwen Robertson, her family, all the legion members and all the Charity Bingo participants who helped raise the funds with the Bingo nights! According to Gwen, this was the largest check that has gone to any of the charities that they have raised money for.

Garage Sale at the Shelter
Saturday June 25th

We wish to thank everyone who helped to sort and sell and to all who donated and purchased their treasures to the garage sale which brought in close to $1,700 for the shelter. However, we will be reinventing this fundraiser for the future with the elimination of sales of household items and focusing on used books with the launching of a second hand book outlet at the shelter. More info to follow.

This event is a LAWS favourite and judging by the turnout on that day, the community loves it also. Again I would like to thank all the good folk who brought their dogs to visit us and get pampered. It always amazes me how well-behaved the dogs are at this event. They're all strangers to each other but love to meet and greet their peers with absolute politeness, except those wagging tails - they were a little difficult to control! A big thank you to all sponsors and attendees, you helped us achieve a fundraising grand total of $1037.74.

Recently the shelter staff and several members of the board were given a two day course in basic behaviour management for shelter and rescue dogs. Topics covered included Reward vs. Punishment, Reactive and Hyperactive Stresses, Exercise and Leash Walking, Canine Communication and more. The shelter is a stressful environment for the animals and it's our job to make their stay with us as pleasant as it can be. It was a great learning experience for all who attended.

Frank Holley, brother of long-time volunteer and supporter of LAWS Freda Ingram, dropped by the shelter today to make a generous donation of $2,000 to help the animals. Frank made the trip from his home in Owen Sound to make the donation and tour the shelter and help walk one of the shelter dogs. A big thank you to Frank! Stomp Your Paws for LAWS! country music concert and auction on March 27th in Carleton Place was a huge success raising $5,000. The board members and staff of LAWS wish to thank organizer Lynn Plexman for the outstanding job she did putting this event together. Lynn, your dedication and devotion to the shelter are remarkable. A big thank you to Liz Taylor and Cathy Taylor for their dedication and non-stop hard work.

A special thank you to singer Arlene Quinn who arranged all the performers (Andy Bowes, Brad Scott Band, Lexi Donaldson, Sara Mitchell and Johnny Spinks), the sound system and sound technician who all donated their time to raise money for LAWS. The country music was outstanding, the sound fantastic and Charlie Kitts has to be the best mc/auctioneer that we have seen. Arlene, we thank you for everything you have done to raise money for the animals. If it was not for you, the dream of this fundraiser would not have come true. Arlene, you are our angel.

Congratulations to Christine Sadler of Carleton Place who won the 50/50 draw! We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the businesses and individuals who donated goods, services, and cash to the event. Thank you. It was the donations for auction that took us over the top and made the event so successful.

And to all the people in the community who came to the event, thank you for your show of support for the shelter, without your donations we would not be able to operate the shelter and care for the animals with the compassion they are so worthy of. Thank you everyone!

Christmas Day at the Shelter

Christmas Day at the shelter is like any other day in many ways: the kitty litter needs changing, the dogs need walking and of course everyone needs food and water. But there is a different feeling in the air because it is Christmas Day after all. And once the chores are done there truly is an All Is Calm feel to the day. In this safe haven, the hustle and bustle of life slows down enough to allow us to bask in the companionship of the animals in our care. To everyone who shared this day with LAWS, thank you. You all demonstrated the true meaning of Christmas.
