By Tanya M. Ursual

From The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) P.O. Box 256, Lanark, Ontario, K0G 1K0:

February is officially here and it generally brings with it the coldest weather of the year. It can be a time of bitter cold, blowing wind and bone chilling dampness. Here are some reminders on how to protect your pet during Canada’s coldest month.

Never leave any animal outdoors during extremely low temperatures. Bring them inside where they have access to a warm dry bed with protection against the wind and elements. If for some reason your animal MUST remain outdoors make absolutely sure they have access to a shelter that is draft-free, dry and is covered with straw or some other material that will help them hold their body heat. During periods of extreme cold an animal can suffer frostbite in several minutes.

Always make sure your pet has access to fresh water. The cold air this time of year can be very drying. Plenty of fresh water and a good quality pet food will ensure your companion has the best coat possible during the winter months. Lower temperatures can lead to a loss in weight as the body uses extra energy to stay warm. If your pet is outside during the colder weather watch for signs of weight loss and increase their food intake, if necessary. Remember to be careful with metal bowls in the cold weather as an animal’s tongue can stick to it and freeze.

Small animals sometimes crawl up under a car hood to find warmth from an engine. It is a good idea to bang on your car’s hood before starting it, particularly if you know small animals frequently visit your property.

Watch out for road salt which often irritates the pad’s of your pet’s feet. Dry them off with a damp towel if your pet has been exposed to road salt. Finally, remember that antifreeze is a serious and fatal poison. Unfortunately, its sweet taste can attract animals. Always be sure to store this chemical properly using extra caution around animals and children.

Regardless of the season, pets are social animals who enjoy human interaction. They want to be with you to receive love and affection and in exchange, they will be keen and loyal companions.
