Volunteers

We are grateful to all those who wish to volunteer at LAWS. For insurance and safety reasons, all volunteers at our shelter MUST be at least 16 years of age. Minors may attend the shelter so long as they are accompanied by an adult during their entire visit.
If you are interested in volunteering at LAWS, please download our volunteer application form (here). We require all application forms to be completed fully for proper processing. The completed form should then be either emailed to us, faxed to 283-0982, mailed to PO Box Box 156 Smiths Falls, ON K7A 4T1, or dropped off at the shelter. Our volunteer coordinator will contact you when volunteer opportunities become available.

Garage Sale Volunteers
Have you thought about helping out at LAWS but didn’t know quite what to do? Have you wanted to help but weren’t quite sure about actually working with the animals. Well here is your chance to help them in a much needed way. We are looking for strong, energetic, volunteers to help about 5 days a month to sort, price and volunteer on sale day. If you can help out please contact our Yard Sale coordinator Steve Schultz at 613-283-7326.

Foster Homes for Kittens
Several pregnant cats, kittens and nursing felines have arrived at the shelter. Sadly, some of these kittens have come in without their mothers. For our wish list this week, we desperately need powdered kitten formula, canned kitten food and non-clumping kitty litter. We still need foster homes for these cats and kittens as their tiny immune systems are weak and they are susceptible to disease at the shelter. If you are able to care for these cats and kittens, for even a short period, we would love to hear from you 283-9308.

Cat Cuddlers and Dog Walkers Needed
Do you have some spare time and enjoy the company of cats or dogs? Our residents would love to meet you and spend some time cuddling or going for a walk. If you're interested, please contact us at (613) 283-9308 or visit our shelter on Glenview Road.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR LAWS VOLUNTEERS

The Lanark Animal Welfare Society was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers, their legacy continues today.LAWS Volunteers are the heartbeat of The Lanark Animal Welfare Society, Laws is so privileged to have been chosen by our volunteers as a way to help us to help them.

The entire LAWS team of board members and shelter staff are so grateful and appreciative of your compassion, hard work, and continued support, Thank You.

The LAWS volunteer is a very special person; they arrive at our Shelter with smiling faces and work in harmony under the guidance of the shelter manager, and a very small number of paid staff.

Our volunteers are here, because they know, the animals in our care did not arrive at the Shelter by choice, many were abused, abandoned, and victims of unforeseen circumstances.

You may have seen our volunteers while at the Shelter, they are walking the dogs, stopping along the way to give them a little scratch behind the ears, or a pat on the back.

You may have met one chopping the ice or raking the leaves around the outdoor kennels, allowing the dogs the opportunity for a little fresh air in a clean run.

Perhaps you recognized your neighbor in one of our Cat and Kitten rooms as he or she was cleaning the cages, emptying soiled kitty litter, or cuddling one of the many cats who were striving for their attention.

Many kind hearted volunteers open up their homes to help foster newborn kittens, and puppies; often they are called upon to provide comfort to animals with special needs, or help care for an animal recovering from an operation.

Beyond our Shelter door, is a group of energetic and supportive number of indivduals, who along with members of the Private and Professional community continue to help bring awareness to LAWS.

They are the helping hands at our Fundraising events, they spend endless hours sewing cat bed liners, they are there enhancing the shelter with new signs, planting flowers, aiding with winter snow removal.

They are the little children with big hearts.
